Exclusive Interview with Andre Noel and John Zakour
----------------------------------------------
Working Daze
By Andre Noel and John Zakour
One of the newest additions to Comics.com, Working Daze looks at life in a modern, high-tech office.
Question: How do you work together to create cartoons? How did your collaboration come about?
John Zakour: I come up with ideas, write them up and send them to Andre to draw. I found Andre in a 'toonist magazine years ago, I liked his artistic style so I asked him to team up.
Andre Noel: John sends a batch of gags. I toss some out right from the beginning and we refine and discuss others as they develop. Thank God for e-mail though; we'll go back and forth all day sometimes if necessary. It was through John's prodding that I became digitized and talking HTML and geekspeak.
We'd started selling well together in many magazine and newsletter markets, but Working Daze is the first daily online we've been able to really sink our teeth into. We met through a cartoonist/writer trade journal called Gag Recap.
Q. Have either of you worked in a high-tech office?
JZ: I still do, as a science writer for Cornell University. I also was a web guru for part of Cornell for a number of years. I also did a lot of freelance computer consulting for a lot of companies. I was writing Perl scripts for web sites in "the old days" way back in 1995.
So, for better or for worse I have a lot of experience with technology. Most (if not all) of the characters in Working Daze are based on people I work with or have worked with.
AN: Yes, but I'm not allowed to talk about it if I wish to remain alive.
Q. What cartoonists have influenced you?
JZ: Charles Schulz was my idol. I use to read the Peanuts books and say, "Boy, I wish I could do that when I grow up." Hopefully when I grow up I will.
I actually wrote Charles Schulz a number of years ago and asked him to let me take over the writing of Peanuts when he retires. I sent him sample gags and everything. He then called me back. It was a real thrill. He said I had a lot of talent as a writer, but he could never see anybody writing Peanuts except him and I needed to find my own voice. I guess I have.
AN: The graphic novels of Belgian cartoonist Hergé were what captivated me in those early years back in Belgium, and probably got me painting and drawing on anything with an interesting surface, much to the chagrin of my parents. When I was later introduced to American newspaper cartoons like Beetle Bailey, Prince Valiant, Dick Tracy and all the other beautiful works that dazzled the funnies, I was in heaven. George Booth, Arnold Roth, Sempé and Sam Gross are most responsible in influencing my style.
