FAQ: What is Comics.com?
Comics.com is the home of comics on the Web! In addition to hosting over 80 daily comics, Comics.com also proudly offers more than 30 Editorial cartoons, E-cards, Send-A-Strip e-mailing, comics merchandise, and three different subscription services that deliver the comics to your e-mail inbox daily!
FAQ: Why do I see the same strip every day?
Comic strips are updated daily. We admit, sometimes there is a glitch in our service and a new comic doesn't come up, but we try to fix it right away. However, if this is something you experience frequently it may be because of the way some browsers and servers cache the images that they receive. It's possible that you are seeing a local copy again and again instead of getting the updated strip from our site. (Hopefully it's a really funny one...)
We've done everything possible on our end to solve the problem for most users, but here are a few more things you can try:
- Click on the strip itself to load just the daily strip onto your screen.
- Click on your reload button to get a fresh copy of everything on the screen.
- Clear your disk cache, then quit and restart your browser.
- Sing "America the Beautiful" while hopping up and down on one foot and juggling coffee beans... (just wanted to see if we could make you do it).
FAQ: I keep seeing Red X's instead of graphics. Why?
Red X's or any other types of bizarre icons are a symptom of an overloaded server or line. Try clicking the "Images" or "Reload" button on your browser. That should fill in the missing pieces. If it doesn't, please contact us at customerservice@comicmembers.com.
FAQ: Do I need to have cookies enabled to use your Website?
Yes! You need to have cookies enabled to use our Website. If you're using IE6, you should go into Internet Options and select the Privacy tab. If the Setting is on "High" or greater, you will have problems using our site because of the cookie requirements. Also, if your browser caching settings are maximized our pages may not load properly. To change this preference in IE, go to Internet Options and select the General tab. Under Temporary Internet Files select Settings. Change the value to "Every visit to the page."
FAQ: What's with the advertising?
It's a fact of life that without advertising and product sales, United Media would have no Website. Currently, our ads are being handled by outside firms that rotate them from their sites, so we don't see the ads prior to their rotation on our pages. We do our best to monitor the advertisements to maintain an enjoyable user experience.
FAQ: Do you sell comic-related products?
Comics.com's online store offers custom mugs, shirts, mouse pads and more from CafePress. You choose which artwork you want from a selection of comic strips and character illustrations, you decide what product you want, and the mug, shirt or whatever you choose is custom made especially for you.
FAQ: I really love a particular artist. How can I let him or her know?
For many of the strips we feature on our Website, we include a "Contact the Artist" link on its page. Select the comic strip from the drop down menu and then check out the links to the left for more information! For artists that do not have a contact the artist link, your best bet is to send a letter to them care of their syndication company.
FAQ: Will you put a link to my site on your Website?
We do not participate in link exchanges. Thank you for your interest!
FAQ: I want to link to your site using a Comics.com graphic. Is it okay?
Please do not use any material from Comics.com on your Website other than the official link icons. Taking material from our Website and displaying it on your Web page without our permission violates United Media's copyrights. Please do not use any comic strips or panels, graphics, or text without our approval. You can download an official icon and use it as a link to our site and provide your readers with access to the comics. We also provide cursors and wallpapers from your favorite strips for your personal enjoyment, but like the official icons we ask that you do not copy or make other uses of them.
FAQ: I would like to submit my comic strip idea. What should I do?
We are always interested in new ideas, especially if they come from you - yes, you who are reading this right now - we think you have a lot of potential! To submit comic features to United Feature Syndicate and Newspaper Enterprise Association for possible syndication, keep reading for our submission guidelines. (If you are interested in submitting a column or text feature, click here for writing guidelines.)
Answers to other frequently asked questions about submissions:
Q: How does syndication work?
A: Syndicates promote, sell, edit, and distribute features (comics, editorial cartoons, puzzles, columns) to newspapers around the world. We also represent our features in a variety of subsidiary venues, such as publishing and licensed media or products. United Media is comprised of two syndicates, UFS and NEA. Although the two syndicates differ in the way they market to newspapers the features are handled by the same sales, editorial and licensing staff. Your contract would be with the individual syndicate, and you would be advised of the differences between the two ahead of time.
Q: How much do cartoonists make?
A: We pay our cartoonists using the standard syndication royalty split.
Q: How many submissions do you get? How many become syndicated?
A: We receive more than 4,000 submissions a year. While there is no set number of acceptances, we launch about two or three new comics each year.
Q: Should I copyright my strip before I submit it?
A: If you are worried about copyright ownership, please consult a lawyer. You might check your library or the Internet on this issue.
Q: I've written a comic strip, but I'm not an artist. Can I still submit my work?
A: Please find an artist interested in your idea and work together to submit it. Although many strips are collaborative efforts, we do not find artists for writers or vice versa.
Q: I have an idea for one cartoon that I'd like you to buy. Can I send it to you?
A: We do not buy "one-shots." We suggest you check "artist market" type books for publications that do.

Searching the Archives
FAQ: Who can search?
Only subscribers with a Comics Extra Gold membership can search our archives. If you currently have a Comic Basic or Comics Extra membership and would like to view comics through our search engine, you must upgrade your account via your My Account page.
FAQ: How do I search the archive?
Search by Keyword or Character Dialogue
You can search by Keyword, Character Dialogue, or both. To find specific dialogue from a particular strip, just type the dialogue within quotation marks. Our search engine will look for direct matches based on the exact words within the quotation marks. You can search for combinations of Keywords by adding AND in between, or search for more than one keyword by simply typing in both keywords.
What is the difference between "Keywords" and "Character Dialogue"?
"Keywords" are words and phrases which are used to identify the prominent themes, ideas, objects, settings and actions in a particular strip. "Character Dialogue" refers to the words and characters which appear in the strip. For the most inclusive search results, we recommend that you select "Both" when performing your search.
Narrow By Date:
Once you've entered your search term, you can narrow the results based on when the strip was originally released. Enter the beginning date to the left, and the end date to the right, to return results only within that time period.
I've tried the above and still can't find the strip!:
Some of our comic properties, including Peanuts, are reprinted after their original publication date. In the case of Peanuts, the strip you may have recently seen on our Website or in your local newspaper was originally published several years ago. To find strips through our search engine which have been reprinted, make sure you are using the original publication date within the date range field. If you are not sure of the original publication date, simply leave the date fields blank. You may get more results, but you should still find what you are looking for.
FAQ: Are searches case sensitive?
Search queries are not case sensitive. It is not necessary to use proper capitalization in order to create successful searches.
FAQ: Why can't I search all the features on Comics.com?
Unfortunately, due to licensing agreements with our artists it is not always possible to make all the strips on our Website searchable. If there is a particular strip which you would like to search for, please let us know. Your opinions matter to us!
Send-A-Strip
FAQ: What is Send-A-Strip?
This feature, located as the "E-mail this Comic to a Friend" icon underneath every comic on Comics.com, enables you to…wait for it…e-mail that comic to a friend. Your message is viewable on the Website for two weeks after you send it.
FAQ: Who can use Send-A-Strip?
Anyone, anywhere, (as long as they are at www.comics.com). You do not have to be a member, paid or free, to use our Send-A-Strip feature, although it couldn't hurt! Paid members do have the ability to send the same comic to multiple e-mail addresses all in one fell swoop.
FAQ: How Do I Send-A-Strip?
Once you've found a strip that makes you think, "Gee, I'd bet that Betsy's boyfriend Mark would really enjoy this comic," all you have to do is click the "E-mail this Comic to a Friend" link located beneath the strip. This will bring you to a page requesting some basic information, (names and e-mail addresses), and then we'll send the strip out. If you want, we'll even let paid members know when Mark read it.

FAQ: All of a sudden my Comic Basic e-mail stopped arriving in my inbox! How do I get it back?
Sometimes this error is caused by away or out of office messages that bounce our e-mails back to us. Once this has happened around 10 times the system puts your account on hold because it believes we've got your e-mail address wrong. If you think this has happened to you, just send us an e-mail at customerservice@comicmembers.com, including the e-mail address your account is set up under, and tell us you're not getting your daily e-mails. We're happy to check it out for you. Another common cause is filtration. An e-mail provider will decide that our e-mails are SPAM and throw them into junk folders. It can't hurt to make certain you've added our address: comics@comicmembers.com to your safe list!

FAQ: Why has my Comics Extra or Comics Extra Gold e-mail stopped arriving in my inbox?
First, check to make certain that you haven't turned off the daily delivery on your "Edit My Comics" page. For more information please see the "Put Delivery of E-mails on Hold" FAQ above. If this is unchecked, click inside the box and then select "Confirm" to confirm your settings and restart delivery. If this is already checked, then there may be two possible causes. The first is that your account has bounced our e-mails back to us and the server has put you on hold. This often happens when people go on vacation and leave Out of Office or away messages on. If you think this is the case, please send us an e-mail at customerservice@comicmembers.com and we can restart your delivery. The second is a possible filtration issue with your ISP. Please add our e-mail address to your safe list, if you have one, and contact your ISP to be certain that they aren't blocking e-mails from comics@comicmembers.com. Our IP address is: 65.114.4.75. If you continue to not receive your comics please let us know!

You can do this at any time during your subscription period. All you have to do is go to your My Account page and choose to upgrade your account type.
FAQ: I upgraded my account from Comics Extra to Comics Extra Gold. Why is the charge on my credit card lower than the full price of my subscription?
When you upgrade, the payment will be prorated against the remaining balance of you current subscription so you may be charged less than the advertised amount.
FAQ: Can I pay for a subscription over the phone?
No. The only way to pay for a subscription is online. Our payment processor accepts any major credit card. Your information will be transferred securely to them.

Technical:
FAQ: Why do I have trouble launching the website when I am using IE 7?
The problem you are experiencing is due to a Java update that is needed to work properly with Internet Explorer 7. You can find the update through the link below:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_java_runtime/
Once Java has been updated for your browser, you should have no further problems accessing our site.
FAQ: I signed up for a Comic Basic account and I got a confirmation e-mail but I am not getting my e-mail. Why?
When you received your confirmation e-mail, did you make certain to click on the link in that e-mail and confirm your account? Sometimes users forget this step and their account will stay listed as pending. If you no longer have the confirmation e-mail to perform this step, please contact us at customerservice@comicmembers.com and we can manually confirm your account for you. Be certain to include your membership e-mail address, and to tell us you need to confirm your subscription.
FAQ: I signed up for a Comics Extra or Comics Extra Gold account and I got a confirmation e-mail but I am not getting my e-mail. Why?
First, make sure you have opted to receive the daily My Comics e-mail. Do this by logging into your account and going to "Edit My Comics". Make sure the box that says "Receive your selected comics by e-mail daily" is checked. (For instructions on how to log in, please see the "Subscriptions and Billing" FAQ for your subscription package.) If that box has a check mark visible in it, we suggest checking with your Internet Service Provider and/or technical support. Many sites block our mail because they misidentify us as spam. They should be able to provide you with assistance.
If the issue is still not resolved after communicating with your ISP please contact us at customerservice@comicmembers.com.
FAQ: I recently went on vacation, and now that I'm back I no longer receiving my daily e-mail. Why?
If you went on vacation and left an out of office or away message that bounced our e-mails back to us, our server has probably put your account on hold. Please contact us at customerservice@comicmembers.com and let us know that you haven't been receiving your daily e-mail. Please be certain to include your subscription e-mail address.
FAQ: Why am I not receiving my daily e-mails to my Hotmail, Bellsouth or MSN account?
Many customers have written in to tell us that they've had trouble receiving e-mails to their e-mail addresses at Hotmail/MSN and Bellsouth.
For Hotmail/MSN: Sometimes Hotmail/MSN will automatically throw our e-mail into member's junk folders. If you click "Junk E-mail" at the left side of your Hotmail page you should be able to find our e-mail. When you have opened your Comics.com e-mail please click, "This is not Junk", which is towards the top of the page. If the e-mail is not in your junk folder then you have probably chosen the "Delete junk mail immediately" option. With this option turned on junk messages are deleted without ever being delivered to your Junk Mail Folder. You should disable the "Immediate Deletion" in your JMF. To check your JMF settings:
1. Click "Options" on the upper-right side of the page.
2. On the left side of the page, click "Mail" and then click "Junk Mail Protection."
3. Click "Junk E-mail Filter" link" and "Delete Junk E-mail" to view your settings.
For Bellsouth: Please contact Bellsouth.net customer service at 1-888-321-2375 for more information. If you remain unable to receive the Comics.com e-mails after speaking to Bellsouth, please consider changing your delivery to a different e-mail address.
FAQ: Can I temporarily stop receiving my comics by e-mail?
If you are a Comics Extra or Comics Extra Gold subscriber, you can stop your daily e-mail delivery by logging into your Member's Center and un-checking the "Receive your selected comics by e-mail daily" box located on the "Edit My Comics" page. For more information regarding this please see the directions in the "Subscriptions and Billing" FAQ for your subscription package.
FAQ: Why aren't my strips opening up? Why can't I see the strip(s) in my e-mail?
- Your Internet Service Provider or company may be preventing you from receiving the images with either a SPAM filter or a firewall.
- Make sure that you are not offline. You need to have a live connection for the strip(s) to come up.
- You may have too many strips selected. Slow Internet connections, like dial-up, are not capable of quickly opening up e-mails containing a large amount of images. This causes the e-mail to suffer information overload and the strips to break. We find this is especially true with Sunday strips because they are larger and in color.
- Your e-mail system is not HTML compatible or you do not have HTML enabled in your e-mail settings. Please check your settings or find more information in your e-mail provider's Help section.
FAQ: The answer to my question is not here. What do I do?
If your question has not yet been answered then please feel free to e-mail us at customerservice@comicmembers.com and we will answer it as soon as possible.
